About me - Final project course 3

This is the end of Course 3 already and that was my favourite course so far as this one was very practical and fun too!

My takeaways from Course 3 were the Presentation Zen and the digital story telling.

Perfect to use in language classroom!

  • Presentations: I have gathered a lot of student friendly resources to teach the design principles and the CARP principles (found on Jocelyn Sutherland blog) which make me like presentations more now!

  • Digital storytelling: The one I made for the week 4 was the little push I needed to finally jump into the water of video editing. I thought it would take forever not only to edit but also to film the students at work (meaning having some “visual “ activities).

I really like the digital story telling as it can be shown to the parents and they can really get a sense of what’s happening in the classroom and hear their children speaking a foreign language.

As I have already explained in a previous post, digital storytelling would be such a powerful tool for the students: speaking in French, being part of a real project, being creative and making their learning visible. I want to add that it’s the case with any visual work.

Which project?

This final project gave me a lot to think about! I went back and forth between the digital story telling and the About me page options! Difficult choice indeed!

  • Option 1: Digital story telling- I wanted to carry on with my Grade 1 project about the time. However, it turned out that I was short of time (how ironic!) to film them as I’ve been out of the classroom quite a lot lately working on another school activity.

  • Option 2: About me page. On the one hand, I needed an About me page for my blog, on the other hand, talking about me and advertising myself is really something that I’m not keen to do.

Finally….

I started working on an infographic for my blog. I looked for inspiration by reading other Coetailers’ blogs. There are so much brilliant infographics/visual resumes!

However I started to wonder how I could fit in my previous working experience on a visual résumé. I have 15 years of work experience and education not related to teaching vs 8 years of teaching education and experience!

I browsed through the templates of Easely.ly, Canva and Piktochart to find some ideas. I then opted for a timeline from Easel.ly. What I like with it, it showed how I became a teacher.

Timelines are also great to use with students to introduce information report and past tense.

Working on my timeline made me realize that my CV  could do with some revamping!

[caption id="attachment_359" align="aligncenter" width="150"]Before- conventional CV Before- conventional CV[/caption]

As you can see that's a very conventional CV, one page recto-verso. I was looking for something more dynamic. I found ideas on how to oragnise the sections when reading the fantastic Revamped resume post from Jocelyn.

After hours of designing and asking for my husband and my favourite colleagues for their critical eyes....Voilà my new CV !

Hi @magalibrutel I really enjoyed reading your post. I hadn't heard of easel.ly before (though I know of mural.ly https://mural.ly/..wonder if they are connected!) I like how you show the before and after pic of your CV too. I think I will need to modify my Coetail blog infographic to something more visual like yours. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. Bonjour Magali,

Thank you for this post. I am only in course 1 but I am very excited about course 3 where I will learn how to make appealing presentations and interesting digital stories. I am a language teacher and I strongly believe that visuals play a huge role in language acquisition and also in students’ motivation and engagement. As you said, infographics are great in a language classroom. They can be used as teaching aid to facilitate the acquisition of grammar especially. I have not been happy with the physical learning environment and have been thinking about how to create space for students that is conducive to language learning. I would like my students to have access to the target language (vocabulary and grammar on walls and online) that they can use to communicate. Traditional posters have not been appealing to my students. I think infographics are the answer.

Digital storytelling is another great tool for language students. Language learners get excited when they can create with language, publish and share their work with an outside audience. My students have used I-movie app to narrate stories but the examples I’ve seen from our fellow Coetails of digital stories are much more appealing and sophisticated. I can’t wait to learn more…

Finally, resume! I have worked on my resume in the last 2 years, and haven’t been happy with it. The content is fine, but there is something wrong with how it looks. I don’t think it reflects who I am as an educator. Thank you for sharing the templates. Your resume looks great. And thank you for mentioning Jocelyn’s Revamped Resume. Just like Jocelyn, I would like to « transform my resume from Auditory-Sequential Appeaser to Visual-Spatial Pleaser » I am going to start messing around with infographics and I am excited about all the learning and fun ahead.

Thank you for providing insight into course 3. Good luck in your learning journey!

  4. Salut Layla,
Thank you for stopping by and for your comments.
The masculine/feminine infographic I made looks very good in my classroom. And my Grade 1 students think it’s super cool! It takes time to make them but it’s well worth it as we know it for grammar and vocab. The good thing is you can put just what you need in it!
Re digital storytelling, I fall in love with it and I can’t stop filming my students. Sometime, I don’t edit the footage but it’s okay as the kids just love watching themselves!
And for your resume, I bet more final projects are gonna be posted in the coming days, so keep reading!
Good luck to you with Course 2! That’s great one too!
